The Governor Just Declared that Texas is in a state of Disaster From the Protests

Due to violent protests, the Texas Governor declared that Texas is in a disaster due to danger to the general public and property loss/damage.

As a string of violent protests have taken place in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, the declaration by the Governor comes after multiple injuries, countless businesses looted and destroyed, and general civil unrest.

Governor Abbott released the following statements: “Every Texan and every American has the right to protest and I encourage all Texans to exercise their First Amendment rights,”

"However, violence against others and the destruction of property is unacceptable and counterproductive. As protests have turned violent in various areas across the state, it is crucial that we maintain order, uphold public safety, and protect against property damage or loss.”

Since the state of disaster was declared by the Governor, Abbott can now designate federal agents to temporarily serve as Texas Peace Officers.

Governor Abbott has activated the National Guard across the state to assist local law enforcement.

City and State resources have been stretched thin given the global pandemic as well as the widespread protests across the state.
